David Monro was the son of John Munro of Fyrish (Ross-shire). Monro served in the Danish-Norwegian army in 1626 as a lieutenant. If he is the David Monro who Colonel Robert Monro [SSNE 94] offered for promotion over a Frenchman in Swedish service, he was his cousin. Gustav II Adolf is reported to have said of Robert Monro's suggestion ‘what shall I think? Hee would place his own Cozen, and not obey my Orders’. David was burnt at Eckernförde in 1628. He was eventually promoted captain in 1632 and major by 1634. In 1632, Captain David instructed his brother John Munro to pay Robert Munro of Assynt and his son Hector ‘certane soumes of mo[n]ey’. This enabled Captain David to purchase the lands of Kildermorie and others in the parish of Alness in Ross-shire. John made the payment to Assynt in June 1632 when David appears as Captain David Munro of Kildermorie. The clan genealogy has ‘Major David Munro slain in France without succession’.
