Captain George Livingstone was born in 1604 in Scotland and was on good terms with [and some say relative of] the Earl of Callander. He migrated to Sweden to serve in the Scottish regiment of Johan Skytte [SSNE 6280] in 1635 and became a lieutenant in George Fleetwood's Jonköping regiment by 1640. In 1645 he received promotion to the rank of captain with the same unit. He died in 1667. He was married to Margareta Bursie, daughter of the councillor and postmaster in Jonköping, Peter Bursie (and his Swedish wife, Elin Törne). Their son Thomas [SSNE 4352] was born in Elbing and was also in Swedish service and was ennobled with the name Hubbestad.

To Krigsrad 5 May 1667. Reference is made to Captain George Lievingstein in a letter signed by Margaret Bursie in which she adds in a Scots hand "god bles y(z)our lordship may y(z)our lordship pitey me" - remarkable for a woman born in Sweden of a Swedish mother to be literate in Scots. Below that there is some information relating to the fact that Thomas Livingstone is with George Livinston's company in Captain Anders G Fleetwood's 'Engelske' regiment in Livland. A separate wee note follows on that in the year 1657, Thomas Livingston got his Commission to transport or receive parts of his regiment from England and for them to be moved to Livland; G. Elgenstierna, Svenska Adelns Attartavlor, vol 5, p.53; H. marryat, One Year in Sweden, including a visit to the isle of Gotland (London, 1862), p.492.
