John Leslie was first in Swedish service as an ensign in Alexander Leslie's [SSNE 1] Narke och Varmland regiment in 1629. He then took service John Ruthven's [SSNE 191] regiment in 1632 as a reformed ensign
Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1629/8,9; 1632/31; C.O. Nordensvan, (ed.), Värmlands Regementes [Närkes och Värmlands Regementes] Historia: Andra Delen, Personal Historia (Stockholm, 1911), 36. This source states he rose to be Lieutenant Colonel in George Leslie's regiment in 1638. Given his service in Narke (Field Marshal Leslie's old regiment), he may have been the officer named as Lt. Colonel in the Army of the Solemn League in 'The Minister's Regiment. See 'A List of the Several Regiments and Chief Officers of the Scottish Army quartered neer Newcastle' (London, 1644).
