GORDON, JOHN [SSNE 2516]
Text source
John Gordon was the second son of Sir Alexander Gordon of Navidale. John was an officer in Swedish service. He was accompanied by his brother Alexander and ‘some other young gentlemen out of Southerland’. They initially shipped at the ferry of ‘Unes’ (modern Littleferry in Sutherland) on the way to Aberdeen and then sailed on 19 October 1637 from Aberdeen with ‘a strong companie of able and resolute men, for Germanie’. They first landed about the Sound and then resorted to the Baltic Sea. They entered the regiment of Colonel Alexander Cunningham [SSNE 2115] regiment in which John was an ensign in 1638. He later served as lieutenant in Ireland. He had been or became a priest.
