Daniel Bullion joined Colonel Donald Mackay's [SSNE 93] regiment in Danish service and then transferred with the regiment to Swedish service. His nationality is ascribed as Wallonian in The Swedish Intelligencer. This may be the same officer Bullion who in 1631 was quartermaster general for a cavalry troop in Swedish service in 1631Anon., The Swedish Intelligencer. The First Part (London, 1632), p.62; Swedish Riksarkiv, P. Sondén, Militärachefer i svenska arméen och deras skrivelser; Swedish Krigsarkiv, Muster Roll, 1629/16,18,20; 1630/22-28; G. Lind, Danish Data Archive 1573; T. Riis, Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot (Odense, 1988), II, p.111; J. Mackay, 'Mackay's Regiment' in Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, VIII, 1879, p.186.
Peter Engerisser gives the following analysis of the various variants of this man's name to argue they are all one in the same person. We thank him for bringing these to our attention: - The Swedish Intelligencer (Part I, p. 62) descripes "Captaine Bullion, a Walloon, since then made Quartermaster Generall to the King's cavallry" playing a leading as a capitain of Mackay's rgt. when taking in the castle of Rügenwalde in August 1630. - Monro (II-12) explains in lenght, how his 'Captain Bullion' was promoted 'Generall quarter Master to Horse' in November 1630 timeframe by Gustavus Adolphus. - On Sept. 3rd, 1631 "generalquartermästaren Bouillon" led a command of 300 horse when crossing the elbe at Wittenberg (Journal de Gustave Adolphe pg. 26; Sveriges Krig (Generalstaben), Vol. IV, pg. 439). - At the battle of Lutzen on Nov. 16th, 1632, "Överstelöjtnant Bouillon" is mentioned as Lieutenant Colonel of Duke Bernhards Liferegiment of Horse (Tönnes Langman's list, in: Historiskt Tidskrift 1892, pg. 159ff.). - At the battle of Nördlingen in Sept. 6th 1634 Lieutenant-colonel "Bouillon" commanded Duke Bernhard's life regiment of horse (500 horse). After the battle he took command of 750 horse in 8 companies. At the Frankfurt muster (Julius Mankell: Uppgifter rörande svenska krigsmaktens styrka etc., Stockholm 1865, pp. 201, 202). - On November 30th, 1634 General Major Johann Vitzthum in a letter to Duke Berhard reffers to "Obristleutenant Bullion". - On January 1st, 1631 Duke Bernhard himself wrote that he had commanded "Herrn Obristen Boullion" against the enemy with a party of horse (Rikskansleren Axel Oxenstiernas Skrifter och Brefvexling etc, second series, vol. 7, pg. 260, 271). Thus Boullion finally becam colonel of horse by January 1635.
