William Ruthven was a Scottish gentleman who first served in Henry Leyell's [SSNE 182] horse regiment in 1579. He was later noted as commanding a unit of Scottish cavalry from 1591-1593 in Swedish service in Estonia. Probably the same man as [SSNE 4177].
