In March 1621 Peter Barclay merchant and kinsman of Sir Patrick Barclay of Towie obtained a birthbrieve from Banff which noted Peter and John as merchants and citizens of Rostock. They were probably related to the Peter Barclay listed as migrating to Rostock as a silk merchant and becoming a burgess there in 1657. His eldest son called himself Joannes Barclay de Tolli. In 1664 his son John Stephen [SSNE 2469], a lawyer, settled in Riga and was still alive when Russians conquered Livonia in 1710

National Archives of Scotland, RH1/2/874 and RH16/209. Birthbrief in favour of Peter and John Barclay, 29 March 1629; T. Fischer, The Scots in Eastern and Western Prussia (Edinburgh, 1903); D. Fedosov, The Caledonian Connection (Aberdeen, 1996), pp.9-10.
