William Netherwood was born in Scotland in the 1500s of noble ancestry. He immigrated to Sweden and became ship's captain. He became court master for the Riksrad and Riksadmiral, baron Carl Carlsson Gyllenhjelm. He received land in 1629. He died in 1633. He was married in 1620 to Carin/Catharina Lilliesparre, and he had two sons who were ennobled: Carl Netherwood [SSNE 4338] and Jons Netherwood [SSNE 4800].

This is probably the same man as William Netherwood (Niderwudd) who appears in the Stockholm city court records for 16 July 1600 as a witness in the case of Johan/John Cut/Coots [SSNE 7782] against Leonard Tuckers, apparently also an English merchant (although another source notes him as a musician). Cut had accused Tuckers of defaming him and threatening to cut his throat. Matters were amicably settled at the court, in the presence of two additional witnesses: Richard Raff, an English trumpeter, and Richard Kent (about whom nothing is as yet known).
