Text source

Johan Hamilton was born in Norway in 1671, the son of an officer. He joined the army aged 12 and by 1698 he is listed as a corporal in the Opland infantry regiment, who later became sergeant and lieutenant in 1700. In 1712 he was captain and chief of a company. He was reduced, and then reinstated in 1714 as chief of dragoons. In 1723 he received a pension of 5 riksdaler, but this was clearly not enough for his needs as he died in debt. After his death in 1748, his daughter in law, Marie Elizabeth Hamilton had to borrow 10 daler to get him buried
