Patrick Bengt Ogilvie was the son of colonel of the Åbo area infantry Colonel Patrick Ogilvie [SSNE 3218], who was also a regional governor in the Kexholm area, and who died after 1671. His mother was Catharina Mannerskold. Patrick was born in the 1630s and was registered in Riga in 1643. As a student he held an 'orat. brevissimam nobilitatis investigationem contineus'. NB - in some sources there are two brothers who may have been conflated, Bengt and Benedict.

While still at Åbo Academy he applied to become an ensign in Captain Davidson's company of Colonel Henrik Sass's Finnish Knights regiment. Ogilvie also served as an ensign in the Adelsfannan in Ingermanland, before becoming a captain of horse in the Nylands Cavalry in 1677. When the nobility of Ingermanland petitioned King Karl XI in September 1675 Patrick's signature was found on the letter. He was engaged in a legal case against Ernst Halm in 1679 for which correspondence survives. He later became a regional governor of Hattuk, Finland in 1683, like his father before him. Throughout the 1680s Ogilvie had dealings with fellow ethnic Scot, Patrick Ogilvie [SSNE 1278]. In addition to his military duties, he served as a lawman in Söderfinne in 1696. In 1703 he was still a major in the Åbo area cavalry. He died in 1705 and was buried in Åbo Cathedral. Ogilvie is sometimes noted as 'capitanus perstrenuus' in the nobility records and elsewhere. He married Anna Sophia von Rohr.
