James Colville was in Swedish service in 1609 as that year he was (according to Hammerskjöld) appointed lieutenant-general for the British troops under King Gustav Adolf, pending the arrival of James Spens [SSNE 1642] though this seems unlikely. Fischer has him as an officer in Spens' regiment. There was a lieutenant colonel in Spens's regiment at that time called Calvine, and this is probably the same man.
