Robert Holland was born in Lincolnshire c.1625. He served the English Parliament under Cromwell, and then entered Dutch service for 7 years. He moved to Denmark in 1682 on Prince Rupert's recommendation and was taken into service as captain in July that year. In 1683 he was on the ship 'Prins Georg'. In 1684 he commanded the Mercurius. In 1688 he was on the Neptunus, and later commanded the warship Svanen. In 1689 he commanded Delmenhorst, and on 7/9 the warship Neptunus on its journey to England. On 13/10 he changed over to the warship Ornen and was, in 1690, convicted of losing command and fined. On 13 December 1690 he was furnished with a travel pass and dismissed.T.A.Topsoe-Jensen and E.Marquard, vol.1
