Thomas Hume appears to have served in both the Swedish and Danish-Norwegian armies. He first appeared as an officer in James Seaton's [SSNE 3476] regiment in the Swedish army at Riga in 1624. He also served as a captain in the Danish army in March 1626 as a captain of horse in the cavalry. He then returned to the Swedish army, probably as a result of Christian IV of Denmark-Norway's capitulation to the Emperor in 1629, when many Scots in Danish service entered Swedish service. This may be the same Captain Thomas Hume who was written to by Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna in June 1632 and provided with a recruitment warrant for 200 Scots to supply a company for the Duke of Weimar's Scottish regiment. Hume was to recruit the Scots from Poland at his own expense, although the Swedes were to provide him with a muster station at Lauenberg in Prussia. Monro describes him as a lieutenant colonel by 1632 making him a likely candidate for the man described as Colonel Hume captured at Nordlingen in 1634. Certainly the editor of Sydnam Poyntz believed it to be he. Hume went on to serve as a colonel in France as part of Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar's cavalry, still in command of his company of Scots
