Balthasar Lyall was born in Sweden and was the son of Henry Lyall [SSNE 3614] (born in Arbroath in 1627) and Judit Rokes. He studied at Uppsala University but at some point moved to Great Britain where he worked for the East India Company (EIC). He was naturalised on 7 March 1700 and was recorded as a communicant at the High German Church, London. Balthasar was elected a Director of the EIC on 3 April 1728 in which capacity her remained until his death in 1740. He also inherited the estate of his brother Henry in 1731, after his brother's death and long service, also as a Director of the EIC. In 1733, Balthasar purchased two properties: Haslingfield Hall, Cambs., from Sir Roger Burgoyne and the Manor and Estate of Bourn, also Cambs. This estate passed to his nephew Henry Lyell, whose daughter Catherine Lyell married the 4th Earl de la Warr, to whose family the Bourn Estate eventually passed.
