New life-saving tuberculosis treatment revealed

Scientists from the University of St Andrews have revealed new tuberculosis (TB) therapeutics that could shorten the treatment of the disease by up to two months and potentially save millions of lives.

Madras demolition

Kevin McMullan, a project manager at the University of St Andrews and former pupil of Madras College, has played a leading role in taking the wrecking ball to his old school. The demolition is being undertaken by Safedem and is making way for the development of ‘New College’, which will ultimately be home to the School of International Relations and the new St Andrews Business School.

World premiere of ‘The Man in the Submarine’

The Byre Theatre, Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland, Perth Theatre and the University of St Andrews have collaborated to create a new Playwriting Award to support the next generation of playwrights living in Scotland. The world premiere of the winning submission – ‘The Man in the Submarine’ [Y Dyn yn y Llong Danfor] by Laila Noble – was performed on Thursday 9 February.

Annual James Wilson Lecture in Law and Government

Tuesday 7 March at 5.30pm (GMT), School III and online (via live-stream)
This year's annual James Wilson Lecture in Law and Government – "Rallies, Riots, and Representation: Constituent Power at Home and Abroad" – will be given by Anthony F. Lang Jr., Professor in International Political Theory at the University's School of International Relations.


Attendance is free and open to all. The event will also be live-streamed via MS Teams. Contact ilcrsta@st-andrews.ac.uk for the online joining link.

Book your place now for the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational taking place on Saturday 17 June 2023. This one-day tournament brings together alumni, parents, students and friends of the University in support of Saints Golf – our performance golf programme.

Alumni Weekend: Friday 16 to Sunday 18 June 2023

Some of this year's exciting events include a Browse with Fizz at Toppings & Company Booksellers and a Welcome Drinks Reception in Sandy's Bar with live music on Friday. Join us on Saturday for the Arnold Palmer Invitational - a friendly golf tournament on the Torrance Course at the Fairmont Hotel. There's also a wine tasting event later that day with wines from around the world (and cheeses to match) in the Beacon Bar, followed by a barbecue. Finish off the weekend on the Sunday with the traditional Chapel Service and pier walk

Book your accommodation now – there's a special alumni discount at David Russell Apartments or McIntosh Hall.

Sands International Film Festival

Following last year's successful inaugural edition, Sands is back with a diverse selection of exciting new fiction and non-fiction work by promising filmmakers from around the world, along with talks and events featuring movers and shakers from the film industry.

This year's festival takes place from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 April 2023 – save the date now, and visit the website below for programme announcements in the coming weeks.

SaintsFunder: Junior Hockey

This month’s spotlight falls on the Junior Hockey project. The University’s Hockey Club wants to reduce barriers to sport in North-East Fife by developing hockey in the local area and making it more accessible for Junior players.

Dr Sarah Marsden of the School of International Relations will be giving the next Saints Talk – Remembering Resistance: Protest, power and place in women's activism – on International Women's Day, Wednesday 8 March at 5.15pm (GMT)


Please note that the Saints Talk by Professor Kirstie Ball of the School of Management advertised in the January issue of St Andrews in the News has been rescheduled for Tuesday 28 March at 5.15pm (BST).
