St Andrews Prize for the Environment

Snowchange Cooperative – the winners of the 2021 St Andrews Prize for the Environment – gave a presentation at the 2022 Final, outlining how this award has supported their Landscape Rewilding Programme.

The Prize has enabled Snowchange to support Finland’s Indigenous Sámi to protect and rewild their critically-important reindeer forests.

Snowchange consulted with the Sámi elders on how best to use the prize money. The elders decided that they wanted a physical memory of their success that could act as a symbol of hope. The funds were used to purchase 30 hectares of pristine forest in Muddusjärvi, Inari, Finland, which is home to reindeer and contains trees that are over 600 years old (see the image above).

SaintsFunder

There are a number of exciting projects this month. Name a flagstone or seat plaque at the Younger Hall and become part of the symbolic heart of St Andrews; support the St Andrews Forest to help offset carbon emissions equivalent to student semester travel; or help us to expand our racing fleet and compete at the highest level of UK university rowing through Legacy60: The Boat Club's 60th Anniversary Fundraiser.

Thanks to everyone who has supported our SaintFunder projects this year.

SaintsFunder is open to all students, alumni and University staff, so send your ideas to SaintsFunder@st-andrews.ac.uk
