Close kin mark recapture methods
Hans J. Skaug (University of Bergen, Norway )
DNA tags have become popular for some types of mark recapture studies. DNA profiles also contain information about kinship among individuals in the sample. This forms the basis for a novel type of methods called Close-kin Mark-Recapture (CKMR), which like ordinary MR aims at estimating parameters such as abundance and mortality. CKMR does not require multiple sampling occasions, and is thus applicable for instance to DNA samples taken from commercial fisheries (catches). I will report on recent progress in calculating kinship probabilities which are at the heart of CKMR methods.
