INSTALLING THE FONTES APPLICATION

The application has been tested successfully on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows
2000, Windows ME, Windows XP and Windows NT. To operate efficiently it needs
a Pentium processor or better, at least 48MB of memory (RAM) and a monitor giving
800 x 600 resolution. If you already have Microsoft Access installed on your
machine, you will need just 1MB of space on your hard drive for the application. If
you do not have MS Access, you may need 70MB of disk space on the hard drive
(though in practice 30MB seems sufficient). For the information files you will need a
web browser, at least Netscape 4.5 or Internet Explorer 5.0. The application is not
designed to work on Apple Macs.

The procedures for installation will vary depending on your own operating system and
setup, but the following should cover the main points.

Below are TWO sets of instructions depending on whether you have (1) MS Access
2000 on your PC or (2) another version of MS Access or none at all. Please follow the
instructions appropriate to your own setup.

1. For Microsoft Access 2000 users.
1.1 If you have MS Access 2000 (which is often installed as part of MS Office 2000),
we recommend that you just copy the file called FontesApp.mde from the CD to your
hard drive. To do this:

1.2 Create a new folder on your hard drive and name it (we suggest FONTES).

1.3 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive, double click the 'My Computer' icon on
your desktop (or use Windows Explorer) and then double click on the CD drive to
open the CD, highlight and copy the file FontesApp.mde, and paste it into the new
folder.

1.4 Right-click on the file FontesApp.mde, click on Properties, and untick the Read-
Only box by clicking on it.

1.5 To run the program go back into the new folder you created (at 1.2 above), then
double click on the file FontesApp.mde and the application should open and read the
data from the CD. You can create an icon on your desk-top by right-clicking on the
FontesApp.mde file in Windows Explorer, and then choosing Create Shortcut, and
drag the shortcut to the desktop.

1.6 If you wish you can also copy the files FontesData.mdb and the folder
FontesHTML from the CD to your hard drive, but make absolutely sure you put
them into the same folder as you have put the FontesApp.mde file; you will then
be independent of the CD.

2. For users who have other versions of MS Access or do not have Access at all.
If you do not have MS Access at all, or only an earlier version such as Access 97, then
you will need to use the Runtime version of Access 2000 which is provided on the
CD. To do this, use the following steps:

2.1 First close all running programs.

2.2 Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive, double click the 'My Computer' icon on
your desktop (or use Windows Explorer) and then double click on the CD drive to
open the CD.

2.3 Double-click on the file setup.exe.

[2.4 In some cases you will then get a message saying that some of your system files
are out of date and the installer needs to restart your system. Click 'OK' and wait for
this to be completed. Then click on setup.exe again and the installation should
proceed.]

2.5 The procedure will copy some files and then give the message:
'The Application you are installing requires Microsoft Access 2000. Setup will now
close and launch the Microsoft Access 2000 Runtime setup program.'
   Click 'OK'.

2.6 Windows Installer for Microsoft Access 2000 Runtime will appear.
Click 'Install Now', accepting the default location.

 [IMPORTANT NOTE
Don't click 'Customize' at this point - click 'Install Now'.
    - If you click 'Customize' by mistake, DON'T THEN ACCEPT THE DEFAULT
INSTALLATION PATH. Specify a path such as:
       "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ART"

-If you do accept the default path at this point, or even click 'Back' and then 'Install
Now', the Access 2000 Runtime will be installed to:
        C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
and this will overwrite any existing Office 97 (including MS Word) or Access 97
installation.
    - If this happens, see article Q235280 in the Microsoft Knowledgebase which gives
instructions to repair the installation of Office 97]

2.7 When installation of Runtime is almost complete, an Installer Information prompt
appears:
'The installer must restart your system before configuration of Microsoft Access
2000 Runtime can continue.'
   Click 'Yes' to restart.

2.8 When the reboot and installation of Microsoft Access 2000 Runtime Setup is
complete, you will see the message
'Welcome to the Fontes Database installation program.'
Click 'OK'.

Then click the large square button with icon to accept the default directory and begin
the installation.

2.9 It will offer the Program Group 'Fontes Database'. Click 'Continue'.

2.10 Setup should complete successfully.

To run the program, click on the Start button, and go through Programs and Fontes
Database, and click on Fontes Database. The installation does not create an icon on
your desk-top but you can usually do this by right-clicking on the Fontes Database
file-name in either the Start program or Windows Explorer, and then choosing Create
Shortcut, and drag the shortcut to the desktop.

After installing in this way the application will use the data on the CD. If you want to
be independent of the CD, you can copy the files FontesData.mdb and the folder
FontesHTML from the CD to your hard drive, but make absolutely sure you put
them into the same folder as the Fontes application. You should find this at
C:\Program Files\FontesApp.

ADDITIONAL POINTS

3. For those who have Access and are familiar with its use, it is possible to use the
Fontes data independently of the application provided, developing your own queries
for instance. To do this, make a copy of the FontesData.mdb file onto your hard drive,
giving it a different name, and then open it in Access. The file is in Access 97, so if
you are using Access 2000 it will invite you to convert the database to the later
version, which you can do.

4. If you are using your own Access 2000 program to run the application and have not
installed the Runtime version, you will find that as you navigate between different
'pages' of the application a small window or tab appears at the foot of the screen for
each of them. It is possible to navigate back and forth by clicking on these instead of
using the Return buttons within the application; but if you do the application will
soon crash and you will have to exit and open it again. If you wish to avoid the
temptation you can try installing the Runtime version as shown above even if you
have Access 2000 already, and the windows will then not appear. But such
installation is somewhat unpredictable and we do not recommend it.

UNINSTALLING THE FONTES APPLICATION

To uninstall the Fontes application from Windows:
    Open Control Panel
    Go to Add/Remove Programs
    Select Fontes Database
    Click on the add/remove button
    Follow the Uninstaller prompts
Then repeat the procedure, selecting MS Access Runtime version
