Academic entry requirements for the International Year One programme - September 2023 entry

This page includes a list of approved qualifications and required grades for students applying for the Science (International Year One) programme starting in September 2023.

The University makes offers on a holistic basis looking at your whole application and not only your academic results. Where your grades are slightly below our requirement, please address this in your personal statement.

We may require higher grades when competition for places is particularly strong and we typically require higher grades in subjects that are relevant to your intended degree. For example, you should be able to demonstrate your ability in Mathematics if you intend to study Economics.

The grades shown in the table below are a guide only.

EU, UK or USA qualifications

If you have a school qualification that is recognised for undergraduate entry and your country is not listed in the table above, we are unlikely to consider you for the Science (International Year One) programme at St Andrews. For example, irrespective of the grades you have achieved, you will not be eligible if you have taken any of the following qualifications:

  • Three A Levels
  • HKDSE
  • French Baccalaureate
  • The full IB Diploma.

If you have studied the US high school curriculum or an accredited US high school diploma, see the USA academic requirements.

You will need to contact us to see if you are eligible for the Science (International Year One) programme, if you:

  • do not have the required combination of a US High School Diploma with a college-preparatory curriculum/honours level classes/ACT/SAT/APs required for undergraduate study
  • have studied a mixed curriculum, such as your national qualification plus A Levels or APs.

If you have IGCSEs, you are eligible for the Science (International Year One) programme. We typically require six IGCSEs, with A grades in relevant subjects.
