Academic entry requirements for the Extended International Pre-Med programme - September 2023 entry
This page includes a list of approved qualifications and required grades for students applying for the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme starting in September 2023.
Applicants to the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme should have studied at least two sciences, including Chemistry and one from Biology, Mathematics or Physics. For this programme, we will consider applicants who did not study Chemistry in their final year of high school but studied Chemistry to Year 10 within the past three years.
Some school qualifications may qualify applicants for the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme or the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) – Intensive Study programme.
We may require higher grades when competition for places is particularly strong and we typically require higher grades in subjects that are relevant to Medicine, especially Chemistry, but also Biology and Physics or Mathematics.
The grades shown in the table below are a guide only.

EU, UK or USA qualifications
If you have a school qualification that is recognised for undergraduate entry and your country is not listed in the table above, we are unlikely to consider you for pre-degree medicine at St Andrews. For example, irrespective of the grades you have achieved, you will not be eligible for the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme if you have taken any of the following qualifications:
- Three A Levels
- HKDSE
- French Baccalaureate
- The full IB Diploma.
If you have been educated in a high school system based on the American curriculum, see the BSc Medicine international requirements.
You will need to contact us to see if you are eligible for the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme, if you:
- do not have the required combination of a US High School Diploma with ACT/SAT/APs required for undergraduate study.
- have studied a mixed curriculum, such as your national qualification plus A Levels or APs.
If you have taken IGCSEs, you may be eligible for the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) programme or the Medical Sciences (Extended International Pre-Med) – Intensive Study programme. We typically require six IGCSEs, with A grades in the sciences – especially Chemistry and Biology. If you have AS Levels, we typically require three AS Levels with A, A, B, including an A in Chemistry. Please note that we only consider applicants with AS levels where evidence can be provided that continuing to study for A-levels (which would allow for direct application to BSc Medicine) is not possible.
