Module description

The new millennium has proved the fast-growing interest in and urgency of addressing LGBTIQ+ matters in cinema in Latin America, and the importance of the work made by women directors in the topic and in the region. Whilst there are productions and names that excel when examining diversity, there is still limited work centred on lesbian subjectivities through the cinemas of Latin America. This honours module explores matters of visibility, agency and representation in Latin American films, especially through women directors’ work on lesbian subjects. By doing so, we will study a set of contemporary feature-length productions of Latin America and the visual strategies implemented by women filmmakers to develop lesbian narratives. We will learn and critically apply relevant frameworks in the contexts of Latin America –such as feminist film theory, lesbian and queer/cuir studies– to recognise, interrogate and celebrate images of lesbian women in post-1990 Latin American women’s filmmaking
