Module description

This interdisciplinary module explores urban space in Argentina in the 1920s and 1930s from the vantage point of the visual arts and literature. It provides a close examination of reactions to urban modernity that were shaped during a period of profound and long-lasting changes in the private and public spheres of the country. Focusing on urban space, specifically on Buenos Aires, as a cognitive map of modernity’s new realities, we will study works by the painter Alejandro Xul Solar (1887-1963), the novelist Roberto Arlt (1900-1942), and the photographer Horacio Coppola (1906-2012).
