Module description

The recent influx of migrants to Italy from all over the world has raised questions about the place of Italy in the global economy, and about what it means to be Italian in a culturally diverse environment. These questions reflect the cosmopolitan or diasporic nature of contemporary culture and simultaneously act as reminders of largely forgotten aspects of Italy’s past: its own history as a colonial power, and as a nation of emigrants. This module looks at the development of an Italian transnational or postcolonial culture through the close study of a range of cultural forms such as cinema, photography, comics, and digital media produced in the last 30 years. As well as engaging with work produced in Italy itself, the module also looks at similar forms cultural production across the Italian diaspora in languages other than Italian.
