Module description
What happened in German literature between the death of Goethe and the appearance of Thomas Mann? What were the Germans doing when Flaubert and Tolstoy were writing? Often labelled inward-looking and provincial, German Realists were critical artists producing works of real beauty which reflect on the role of literature in the modern age. This module explores the aims and practices of German-speaking authors from 1845 - 1898. Students will examine theoretical writings alongside a range of representative literary texts (poetry, novels and novellas) from German and Austrian authors such as Stifter, Storm and Fontane. Students will develop their own definitions of Realism and reflect on the value of this movement for modern readers.
