Module description

Although today we take the participation of women in German letters for granted, the student of earlier periods cannot fail to observe that the pantheon of German literature contains few women. Yet women played a decisive part in constituting the field of German letters, as readers, authors, translators, critics and mediators. In this module students will encounter women writing in German who fulfil several of these roles. In the course of such encounters we shall address such issues as the historical canon, the accessibility of writing by women, and the influence of gender on literary work and the market for literature.
