Module description

The rise of mobile internet and streaming platforms have revolutionised the way in which we watch films and television, in English and other languages, but also what we understand by screen culture. This module explores the ways in which screen cultures, in their widest sense, are both reflecting and shaping a wide plurality of French identities. A typical semester will cover four topics, from a broad selection including (1) hit series in French at home and abroad (2) comedy and language (3) decentring French screens: diversity and decolonisation (4) French documentaries: living in the margins (5) animation and video games: new forms of French storytelling. Discussion topics will focus on the representation of gender and sexuality, national and regional identities, youth culture, genre, contemporary French language use, dialects and register. Students will be encouraged to select their own primary sources for independent research. The module will be primarily taught in French.
