The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

Module description

This module provides students with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth investigation into issues within the field of TESOL. Student dissertations will be supervised by members of IE teaching staff who will advise on the choice of subject and provide guidance throughout the research process. The completed dissertation of up to 15,000 words will be submitted by the stated dissertation deadline in November.

  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of a relevant area of teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • Critically evaluate the existing relevant research and use this to inform your own research.
  • Articulate clear research questions and follow ethical procedures when conducting your research.
  • Conduct your own independent research and data collection, using appropriate research methods and tools.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyse the data you collect and to present it in a clear and informative way.
  • Produce an extended piece of written work, in appropriate academic style.
