SCOTCAT credits

The Scottish Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SCOTCAT) system allows credits gained in Scotland to be transferred between institutions. The number of credits associated with a module gives an indication of the amount of learning effort required by the learner. European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits are half the value of SCOTCAT credits.

The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) provides an indication of the complexity of award qualifications and associated learning and operates on an ascending numeric scale from Levels 1-12 with SCQF Level 10 equating to a Scottish undergraduate Honours degree.

Module description

This module is designed to equip students with the skills required to describe and analyse written discourse. It does not assume prior knowledge of linguistics and seeks to introduce students to selected fundamental concepts, relevant to English language teaching. Students will acquire appropriate terminology and techniques in the analysis and description of grammatical terms and structures.

Intended learning outcomes

  • apply key concepts and appropriate terminology in the analysis and description of grammar
  • engage with different conceptualisations of grammar and apply these to a variety of teaching contexts.
  • apply knowledge of key texts in grammar and linguistics to language teaching
  • differentiate approaches to the teaching of grammar/pronunciation
  • critically justify the appropriacy of a grammar/pronunciation teaching approach to a particular teaching scenario and context
