Entry requirements
A 2.1 or higher undergraduate Honours degree in a relevant biological science or biotechnology (or international equivalent).
If you studied your first degree outside the UK, see the international entry requirements and the English language requirements if your first language is not English.
We will also consider applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree. In these circumstances we expect candidates to have at least five years of relevant professional learning. The Admissions team will holistically assess your application and determine the best route of entry for you. In some cases, this may be onto the PGCert in the first instance where students will have the opportunity to progress and graduate with a full Masters degree.

Course details
What will you be taught?
- The programme will teach contemporary approaches to marine and land-based aquaculture, including operational best practice, engineering solutions, health and safety, animal welfare, and sustainability.
- The programme will help you to understand how to embed sustainability in all aspects of aquaculture, from production to markets.
- The modular course structure will allow you to tailor the learning material to your professional needs and main interests.
How will you be taught?
- You will study using a combination of video lectures, online presentations, handouts, tutorials, guided reading, online discussions, self-assessment and problem-solving tasks.
- The content will be distributed over multiple weeks, granting you the flexibility to tailor your learning experience according to your existing schedule.
- Discussion forums will provide opportunities for discussion and exchange of ideas with your peers and tutors.
- All the course resources and reading material will be available via the University’s online learning platform, "Moodle".
- Students on the MSc course will undertake a dissertation in sustainable aquaculture. Projects with an employer or sponsor are welcomed (subject to eligibility).
Teaching
Undergraduates at the University of St Andrews must achieve at least 7.0 on the St Andrews 20-point grade scale to pass a module. To gain access to Honours-level modules, students must achieve the relevant requisites as specified in the policy on entry to Honours and in the relevant programme requirements.

Fees
- MSc (three years) £18,000 (charged £6,000 per year of study)
- PG Dip (two years) £12,000 (charged £6,000 per year of study)
- PG Cert (one year) £6,000
Fees will be charged evenly across each academic year, based on the maximum length of study confirmed for your specific programme. For example an MSc student will be charged £6,000 per year for a three year period. Students completing in a shorter length of time will have fees adjusted at relevant points in their programme so that the full fee has been charged prior to completion.
Application fee
Before we can begin processing your application, a payment of an application fee of £50 is required. In some instances, you may be eligible for an application fee waiver. Details of this, along with information on our tuition fees, can be found on the postgraduate fees and funding page.
Funding and scholarships
The University of St Andrews offers a number of scholarships and support packages to postgraduate students each year.
Commonwealth applicants scholarship
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) is offering ten scholarships for applicants accepted for admission to the online MSc Sustainable Aquaculture course in the Academic Year 2024-2025. The scholarships are intended for candidates from low and middle-income, eligible Commonwealth countries, and they are funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
The deadline for submitting an application to CSC is 4pm on Thursday 28 March 2024. The scholarships are for study beginning in September or October 2024. Details of how to apply to CSC are available on the Commonwealth Scholarships website.
15% Recent Graduate Discount
