Direct entry to second year Chemical Sciences BSc (Hons) 2020 entry

It is possible for students applying for the single Honours BSc in Chemical Sciences to enter directly into the second year of study, meaning you will complete your degree in only three years instead of four.

This option is offered to students with excellent Advanced Higher, A-Level or International Baccalaureate qualifications. 

Students who enter directly to second year will take modules required by the Chemical Sciences BSc programme from second year on, along with an additional introductory module specifically designed for direct entry students. 

Direct entry students will have the opportunity to study abroad during their second year of study.

Entry requirements

These grades are the overall standards required to consider you for entry.

    • Advanced Highers: A in Chemistry and B in one other science from the following:
      • Mathematics
      • Physics. 
    • Highers: AAAAB 
    • AAA, including Chemistry and one other science from the following:
      • Mathematics
      • Physics.
    • 38 (HL 6,6,6) including HL6 in Chemistry and HL6 in one of the following:
      • Mathematics
      • Physics.

International applicants

If English is not your first language you will need an overall IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking), or an equivalent English Language qualification.

How to apply

Do I need to have studied this subject before?

Applicants must have studied Chemistry at SQA Advanced Higher, GCE A-Level, or equivalent. Preference may be given to candidates offering strong science qualifications.

Faculty entry requirements

You must also meet the Faculty of Science minimum qualifications. These vary depending on which qualifications you hold.

Other qualifications

Timetables

St Andrews students meet with their Adviser of Studies at the beginning of Semester 1 in September to complete advising – a compulsory part of the matriculation process. After module choices have been decided, a timetable will be allocated indicating the dates and times of classes.
