St Andrews is committed to attracting the very best students, regardless of financial circumstances. Bursaries and scholarships are designed to provide assistance to help students support themselves during their time at university and also aim to reward academic excellence.

Funded by the University

The following scholarships are funded by the University of St Andrews and generous donations are made by alumni and friends of the University of St Andrews, charitable trusts and other organisations and companies.

  • Accommodation Award - UK/EU
    For entrant undergraduate students, £1,500 per annum to help with the cost of accommodation while studying and living in St Andrews, selection is based on financial need.

  • Adobe Prize Bursaries
    For entrant undergraduate students with a degree intention of Computer Science or any joint honours combination involving Computer Science.

  • Ambassadors Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students, selection is on the basis of financial need. The successful candidate should be prepared to serve as a Student Ambassador for the University.

  • BA International Honours Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students entering first year of the BA International Honours Programme commencing at St Andrews.

  • Fife Dux Scheme
    For entrant undergraduate students who attended a Fife state funded secondary school and identified as the most academic and accomplished pupil at the school in the year of application to the University.

  • Gateway to Medicine Scholarship
     We offer a limited number of needs-assessed bursaries worth up to £4,000 to Scottish domiciled applicants to the one year Gateway to Medicine programme, who have a household income of £34,000 or less.

  • Gateway to Physics and Astronomy Scholarship
    We offer a limited number of needs-assessed bursaries to UK/EU domiciled applicants to the one year Gateway to Physics and Astronomy programme.

  • The Katie Pearson Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students, students are required to submit a creative writing piece with their application.

  • Mathematics & Statistics Subject Based Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students with a degree intention within the School of Mathematics and Statistics, selection is on the basis of financial need. This award is for the students entrant year only.

  • Part-time Study Scholarships
    For entrant undergraduate part time students to help with the costs associated with being a student, including travel, books and childcare.

  • Physics & Astronomy Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students with a degree intention of Physics, Astrophysics or Theoretical Physics or any joint honours combination involving Physics or Theoretical Physics. This award is for the students entrant year only.

  • St Andrews Entrant Bursaries
    For all UK domiciled entrant undergraduate students we are offering a bursary of £1,500 per annum to applicants who can demonstrate a household income of £34,000 or less, which will supplement funding available from household contribution and government sources in order to alleviate financial burden.

  • St Andrews General Wardlaw Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students the Wardlaw scholarship scheme was established in 2004 to provide financial assistance to academically gifted students who would otherwise struggle with the cost of studying at the University of St Andrews. A variety of different Wardlaw scholarships are available each year with values usually ranging from £1,000 to £3,000 per year, most are awarded for the duration of a students course.

  • Students’ Association Bursary
    For entrant undergraduate students this scholarship was formed by the Students Association to provide financial assistance to academically gifted students who would otherwise struggle with the cost of studying at the University of St Andrews.

The following scholarships are offered by Academic Schools and Units within the University.

  • Chemistry Purdie Scholarships
    For entrant undergraduate students with a degree intention of Chemistry or a Chemistry related subject within the schools of Chemistry. This award is for the students entrant year only.

  • Choral and Organ Scholarships
    Scholarships to fund participation in St Salvator's Chapel Choir.

  • Music Centre Scholarships
    For students who have been accepted at the University and can demonstrate musical merit.

  • Saints Sport Scholarships
    Funding may be available to students who show exceptional abilities and potential in sport while studying at St Andrews.

  • Saints Golf Scholarships
    Funding may be available to students who show exceptional abilities and potential in golf while studying at St Andrews.

External

The following scholarships are administered and funded outside the University of St Andrews but may be available to eligible students who wish to attend the University.

  • Angus Educational Trust
    Funding may be available to students who live or parents live in Angus.

  • Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland
    Funding may be available to students who are not eligible to receive government funding towards the cost of their tuition fees. The Carnegie Trust will consider applications from students of Scottish birth, parentage or schooling for courses leading to a first degree of a Scottish University.

  • Duncan Trust
    Grants may be available to students who are training, or intend to train, for the Ministry of the Church of Scotland. The grants may be awarded at any time during the students course in the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Divinity.

  • Entrepreneur Scholarship Programme
    For undergraduate and postgraduate students who can demonstrate academic excellence and entrepreneurial potential.

  • Katherine Smith Bursary
    Only open to candidates that have been educated at St Leonards School, St Andrews.

  • Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust
    For students applying for any undergraduate programme whose parents are commercial travellers, grocers or chemists; based on financial need.

  • Royal Television Society Technology Bursary
    For entrant undergraduate students undertaking an Engineering or Computer Science course who hope to advance into a career in television.

  • The Maxton Bequest
    For undergraduate students who were born or one of whose parents were ordinarily resident within the Parish of Crieff or Burgh of Kirkcaldy at the time of birth.

  • The Menzies Bursaries
    For undergraduate students who are relatives of the founder James Menzies, name is Menzies or born on the Menzies Estates (in the Parishes of Dull, Weem and Fortingall).

  • The Perth and Kinross Educational Trust
    For undergraduate students who were born and educated in the former County of Perthshire.

  • Stirlingshire Educational Trust
    For undergraduate students who have a minimum of five years residence in Stirlingshire or were born there.

  • George McElveen III Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students from North Carolina, Georgia or Virginia who have an interest in golf. This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need.

  • Hong Kong Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students from Hong Kong, the selection committee seeks applicants who fulfil the academic criteria for entry to the University and will be selected on the basis of financial need.

  • International Excellence Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students, the selection committee seek candidates who are typically confident, dynamic, gifted students with academic excellence. The successful candidates should be prepared to serve as a Student Ambassador for the University and represent the University at a number of events.

  • International Undergraduate Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students, the scholarships will be awarded as a tuition fee reduction of up to £4,000 per year for each year of the students undergraduate studies and is awarded on the basis of financial need.

  • Students’ Association Bursary
    For entrant undergraduate students this scholarship was formed by the Students Association to provide financial assistance to academically gifted students who would otherwise struggle with the cost of studying at the University of St Andrews.

    For entrant undergraduate students who are a resident of the USA and with a degree intention of Chemistry or a Chemistry related subject within the school of Chemistry. The award is for the students entrant year only.

  • Chemistry Purdie Scholarships
    For entrant undergraduate students with a degree intention of Chemistry or a Chemistry related subject within the schools of Chemistry. This award is for the students entrant year only.

The following scholarships are administered and funded outside the University of St Andrews but may be available to eligible students who wish to attend the University.

  • Azerbaijan Ministry of Education scholarship
    For students from Azerbaijan who wish to study undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate degrees at selected institutions in the UK, including the University of St Andrews. The scholarship programme covers all study and travel-related costs, including visa, travel, accommodation and tuition fees.

  • Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland
    Funding may be available to students who are not eligible to receive government funding towards the cost of their tuition fees. The Carnegie Trust will consider applications from students of Scottish birth, parentage or schooling for courses leading to a first degree of a Scottish University.

  • Entrepreneur Scholarship Programme
    For undergraduate and postgraduate students who can demonstrate academic excellence and entrepreneurial potential.

  • Katherine Smith Bursary
    Only open to candidates that have been educated at St Leonards School, St Andrews.

  • The McEuen Scholarship
    Only open to candidates from Canada who have already applied to study at St Andrews for a first degree. The scholarship covers all tuition and residence fees and includes a book allowance of £200.

  • R Harper Brown Memorial Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students from the USA to assist in defraying the cost of a college students study at a university in Scotland. Student must be a graduating senior in high school with the acceptance and intention to attend university in Scotland. Preference will be given to applicants who reside within 100 miles of the greater Chicago area.

  • SOCAR Scholarship
    For entrant undergraduate students from Azerbaijan on its Study Abroad Scholarship programme. The scholarship includes tuition fees, living costs and transportation expenses. Successful candidates must agree to return to Azerbaijan to work for SOCAR after their studies.

  • WU Scholars
    For entrant undergraduate students holding an offer of a place within the course categories of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and business/entrepreneurship. Students must be aged 18-26.
