The University of St Andrews is nationally and internationally recognised for its quality of teaching and research. However, it is also committed to rewarding excellence within the local community to which it belongs. The University will award the Fife Dux Scholarship to a student who:

  • Is domiciled in Scotland for the purpose of fee status and has been educated in a state funded secondary school in Scotland at least for senior phase (S4 – S6) and is currently at a state secondary school in Fife
  • Is identified as the most academic and accomplished pupil at the school in the year of application to the University, and
  • Obtains an offer of attendance at the University of St Andrews for an undergraduate course of studies resulting in a first level degree

Other factors will be taken into consideration when making this award. These will include socio-economic factors, financial need, educational environment and personal statement.

Value of award (per year)

The recipient will receive one of the following, depending on the student’s living arrangements:

  • Up to £7,500 towards maintenance if the student is living away from home
  • Up to £2,500 towards maintenance if the student is living at home

 The recipient will be required to confirm their intended place of residence at the start of each academic year so that the appropriate level of funding can be awarded on a yearly basis.

Duration of award

This award is paid annually for the duration of the student's undergraduate programme.

At what stage of my course application can I apply for this scholarship?

Please apply for the scholarship after you have submitted your application for a place at St Andrews.  You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the scholarship.

You must:

  • Attend a Fife state-funded secondary school.
  • Be identified as the most academic and accomplished pupil at the school in the year of application to the University.
You will be required to:
  • Provide a statement of motivation, within the application form, in support of your application (not more than 2000 characters). This should include your reasons for applying for the scholarship, explaining how you would expect to benefit from the opportunities the award provides, and describing how you think you might contribute to St Andrews during your time here. You can also mention activities or personal qualities that you consider particularly relevant to your application.
  • Upload a school statement, which must be a letterheaded document from your school, including the following information:
    • Confirmation that you are the Dux of the school, the most academic and accomplished pupil at the school in the year of entry.
    • Reasons for this decision and an explanation of how the decision was arrived at.
    • A reference in support of your application.
  • Upload evidence of your household income, as stated in your funding financial profile. 
    • Evidence of the total household income as stated in your scholarship application.

How to apply

This scholarship is available through the Fife Dux Scheme (Undergraduate) application form. You can access this application through the Scholarships and funding catalogue in the Scholarships and Funding section of My application.

After you have applied to a new course beginning in the academic year 2026-2027, you will be provided with login details for the My application portal. You must allow at least two working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.

If applying to this scholarship, please be aware of the following requirements:

  • Core personal details may be passed to the benefactors of your scholarship. Your name, the name of your town of origin, school/college and subject of study will be passed to the donor of the scholarship with your consent.
  • Your scholarship award in subsequent years of study is conditional upon your successful completion of the academic requirements to progress in your proposed subject of study at the University of St Andrews. If your scholarship is subject-related then your award is usually also conditional upon your continuing to study that specific subject.
  • Attendance at Development related scholarship events (including invitations to meet the donors) is strongly encouraged. You will be invited to these as appropriate by the Development Office.
  • Submission of reports throughout the period of scholarship support. You are required to submit an Introductory Biography at the start of your award period and the Development Office will contact you towards the end of the academic session for a report on your time at St Andrews to share with the donors of your award. This will be an annual cycle for the duration of your award.
