The School of Modern Languages offers a limited number of PhD scholarships covering tuition fees and an annual stipend to new entrants based on academic merit and financial need for the full tuition fee-paying duration of their postgraduate study programme.

Value of award (per year)

One award per annum, paying full tuition fees and an annual stipend paid at a rate set by the University of St Andrews. For 2025-2026, the stipend is £19,775 p.a., with an annual uplift published by the University each academic year.

All applicants who accept a place on a PhD programme will be considered automatically for the scholarship. Your course application will serve as your scholarship application.

Additional criteria

You must not already hold a doctoral degree or be matriculated for a doctoral degree at the University of St Andrews or another institution.

In support of your application, you will be asked to upload the following supporting documents:

  • University transcripts, including interim transcripts for any degrees pending
  • a research proposal
  • a CV that includes a history of your education and employment to date

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship. Applicants should apply online through the normal University application process and indicate an interest in the scholarship in their personal statement. Home fee status students will be automatically considered for the scholarship.

  • Your scholarship award in subsequent years of study is conditional upon your successful completion of the academic requirements to progress in your proposed subject of study at the University of St Andrews.
