The School of Geography and Sustainable Development (SGSD) is offering two fully funded 3.5 year PhD scholarships as part of the 2025-2026 PhD Scholarship Competitions

The successful SGSD scholarship candidates will receive funding for three and a half years as a stipend, currently £19,775 per annum, and payment of tuition fees. Students funded from this call will also have opportunities to contribute to teaching within the School, typically taking on demonstrating, tutoring and marking duties, which will be paid separately and on top of the annual stipend throughout their studies.

Value of award (per year)

£19,775

Full-fees award and stipend. The stipend will be paid at the current St Andrews PhD stipend rate, which was £19,775 in 2025-2026. The scholarships do not cover any continuation, extension or resubmission period or fees, Visa fees, Immigration Health Surcharge, IELTS fees, costs for travel to and from the UK or research training grant or another equivalent award for research expenses. The scholarships do not cover cost of living for any dependants.

Duration of award

3.5 years. The award term excludes the continuation period and any extension periods.
