St Andrews Access Scholarship

This scholarship is jointly funded by The Robertson Trust and University of St Andrews. The Robertson Trust’s Scholarship has supported career development amongst Scottish undergraduates since 1992. The Journey to Success offers financial support plus the following opportunities:

  • Welcome Event: designed to begin building the peer support networks scholars can benefit from to ease their transition into university and maximise the potential of their degree.  
  • Leadership development: encourage second-year Scholars to support their peers throughout the Welcome Event and first year at university.   
  • Personaldevelopment training sessions: improve the self-awareness needed for university and graduate recruitment success.  
  • Career Pathways and Internships: support Scholars to source meaningful work experience, access career awareness-raising activities and make professional contacts.  
  • Alumni Network: encourages our alumni to mentor younger scholars and help build the Journey to Success support network. 

Value of award (per year)

Up to £4,400 towards maintenance

44% paid directly by the Robertson Trust in two instalments (October and March)

56% paid by the University of St Andrews in monthly instalments.

Duration of award

This award is paid annually for the duration of the student's undergraduate programme.

At what stage of my course application can I apply for this scholarship?

Please apply for the scholarship after you have submitted your application for a place at St Andrews. You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the scholarship.

Additional criteria

  • 16-25 year olds accessing a programme of undergraduate study at a Scottish University;  
  • Candidates are assessed according to both financial need and academic ability; it is expected that recipients of the award are high achievers; 
  • Commitment to learning and a keenness to participate on our self-development programme, The Journey to Success; 
  • Clear indication of financial need i.e. evidence of low income, receipt of EMA/Free School Meals, entitlement to maximum amount of SAAS; 
  • Evidence of socio-economic challenges or care experience impacting on education; 
  • Resident in Scotland at time of application; 
  • ‘Leave to remain’ within the UK; 
  • Only first degrees with evidence of a university offer can be considered. 

How to apply

Applicants to The Robertson Trust must first be nominated by their High school or by the University.

If you have not already been nominated by your High school, this scholarship is available through the St Andrews Access Scholarship application in View and continue my scholarships and funding in the Scholarships and Funding section of My application.

After you have applied to a new course beginning in the academic year 2024-25, you will be provided with login details for the My application portal. You must allow at least two working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.

Post deadline nomination

Following the Access Scholarship deadline, nominee details (name, email address) will be passed to The Robertson Trust.

Nominees will then receive an external Robertson Trust application link.

The Robertson Trust (TRT) offer additional benefits to the Access Scholarship and the University of St Andrews encourages nominees to complete and submit The Robertson Trust application. By applying via the Access Scholarship, you will still be guaranteed any Access Scholarship benefits TRT do not provide, such as the Sport discount. If you re not found eligible by TRT your funding will default back to the Access Scholarship.

Requirements of the Scholarship

If applying to this scholarship, please be aware of the following requirements:

  • Core personal details may be passed to the benefactors of your scholarship. Your name, email address, the name of your town of origin, school/college and subject of study will be passed to the donor of the scholarship with your consent.
  • Your scholarship award in subsequent years of study is conditional upon your successful completion of the academic requirements to progress in your proposed subject of study at the University of St Andrews. If your scholarship is subject-related then your award is usually also conditional upon your continuing to study that specific subject.
  • Attendance at Development related scholarship events is a condition of this bursary. You will be invited to these as appropriate by the Development Office and The Robertson Trust.
  • Submission of reports throughout the period of scholarship support. You are required to submit a reflective Scholar Progress Report, to The Robertson Trust, on or before 15th January and 15th August of each year.

The outcome of your scholarship application will be available on "View my applications" in the Scholarships and Funding section of My Application during summer 2024.
