You do not have to wait until you have received an offer of a place to study at the University of St Andrews to apply for a scholarship.

These scholarships are offered in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The Blue Carbon WWF scholarship is available to students studying Blue Carbon: Science & Policy course as part of the University’s St Andrews Summer Study programme.

The Selection Committee seeks applicants who are gifted students with academic excellence. We particularly welcome and encourage applicants from the Global South for these scholarships. Successful scholars will be expected to fulfil an ambassadorial role and represent the University at a number of events and contribute to various University publications.

Value of award (per year)

There are up to six awards available.

The scholarship covers your course fee for Blue Carbon Science & Policy as well as University-arranged travel to and from St Andrews.

Course fee is inclusive of:

  • Tuition fee
  • Accommodation and all meals
  • Extra-curricular activities organised by the programme
  • Access to University facilities (Sports Centre, Library, IT services)

University-arranged travel to and from St Andrews is inclusive of:

  • One return economy flight to Edinburgh Airport.
  • Airport transfer to and from St Andrews.

The University will arrange your flights and airport transfer on your behalf through our approved travel provider. Further details will be provided to successful recipients once the awards are announced. The following is not covered by the scholarship: Associated costs prior to your travel to St Andrews such as visa application fees. Personal expenditure such as snacks or laundry. 

Duration of award

This award is for the duration of the two-week Blue Carbon: Science & Policy course.

At what stage of my course application can I apply for this scholarship?

You can apply for the scholarship after you have submitted your course application for Blue Carbon Science & Policy as part of St Andrews Summer Study. You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the scholarship.

As part of the application, you will be asked to provide a statement of suitability as a candidate for the scholarship and how it would help support you further in the field of Blue Carbon.  

How to apply

This scholarship is available for application via the Blue Carbon WWF Scholarship through the scholarships and funding catalogue in the Scholarships and Funding section of My application. 

After you have applied to the Blue Carbon: Science & Policy course, you will be provided with login details for the My application portal. You must allow at least five-seven working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship. 

The scholarship application deadline is 23:59pm (UK time) on 4 March 2026.

However, to be eligible for selection, you will need to ensure that you have provided all the necessary documents for your course application to Blue Carbon to shortcourses@st-andrews.ac.uk by 23:59pm (UK time) on 4  March 2026. These include: 

  1. Official Academic transcript(s)
  2. English Language Certificate (if applicable)
  3. Academic reference

Requirements of the scholarship 

If applying to this scholarship, please be aware of the following requirements: 

  • Provide a testimonial of their experience on the course and the wider St Andrews Summer Study programme. 
  • Participate in at least one future alumni or outreach activity (such as a webinar, info session, or community event) to support and inspire future scholars. 

When will I know the outcome?

The outcome of your scholarship application will be available through 'view my funding applications' in the Scholarships and Funding section of My Application by mid/late March 2026.
