The School of Modern Languages is pleased to offer a scholarship to an incoming student on the Comparative Literature or Global Languages, Literatures and Cultures MLitt Programmes offered by the School.
Value of award (per year)
One award is available per annum which will cover the full cost of tuition fees for a Home student, which is a student living in Scotland. This will be communicated to the successful applicant.

This scholarship is available to applicants living in the UK (with Home fees status) who will be starting a new course in the next academic year. Selection is based on academic excellence and financial need. Please evidence all the following that apply to you in your application.
Applicants must meet at least one of the following additional criteria:
- Be care experienced in the UK: please provide a local council confirmation letter
- Have been a young carer
- Have completed their undergraduate degree as a mature student
- Have received a SAAS bursary or received benefits during the period of undergraduate study
- Have been part of a widening access initiative, such as the Sutton Trust Summer School
- Be a first-generation higher education student in their family
- Have qualified for free school meal provision
- Be disabled, physically or otherwise
- Be Black, Asian or from a minority ethnic group
Information received in the application will be taken into consideration as part of the overall review process, and no part will be taken in isolation. This information will only be used for the purposes of scholarship assessment.
In support of your application, you will be asked to upload the following supporting documents:
- two academic references
- University certificates and transcripts
- evidence of being care experienced, receipt of SAAS bursary or benefits
If you would prefer not to disclose any financial information, you will not be considered as a needs-based applicant.
Acceptable documents include confirmation letters from SAAS and/or the Department of Work and Pensions, letter from local government, council tax statements, tax credits, PIP, DLA. Documents must be PDF and in English.

You must upload the required paperwork outlined below alongside the standard supporting documents when applying for your place at St Andrews. You should indicate your interest in the scholarship in your personal statement. You must not wait until you have received an offer of a place. All eligible applications received before 31 May 2025 will be considered for the scholarship.

The School of Modern Languages Masters Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with any other award offered by the University of St Andrews.
