The School of Classics would like to offer a scholarship to a 2025 entrant postgraduate research (PhD) Classics student for the duration of their three-year course, with the aim of widening access to students from groups traditionally excluded or under-represented in academia.

Value of award (per year)

  • Full tuition fees (Home or Overseas)
  • Up to £19,737 per annum, consisting of maintenance and (if applicable) NHS surcharge, one return flight per year and visa costs.

Duration of award

This award is available for 3 years of postgraduate study.

Please apply for the award after you have submitted your application for a place at St Andrews. You do not need to wait until you have received an offer of a place before applying for the award.

In making decisions about the award of the scholarship, we will give consideration to a variety of criteria, including, but not limited to the following:

  • We may give preference to applicants who self-identify as members of excluded or under-represented minorities.
  • We may give preference to applicants who are historically underrepresented in classics (students from ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students who are the first in their family to attend university).
  • We may give preference to applicants from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • We may give preference to applicants who can demonstrate a household income of less than £34,000.

We may also give preference to applicants from Developing economies as defined by the United Nations - Table C of this document.

You are required to upload one personal reference in support of your application. Where possible, your references should support criteria you meet from the list above.

How to apply

This scholarship is available for application through the ‘Scholarships and Funding catalogue’ in the Scholarships and Funding section of My Application.

  • After you have applied for your chosen Postgraduate Research course for the 2025-2026 academic year, you must allow at least five working days for processing and issue of your log in details before you can apply for this scholarship.
  • If you are a current student at St Andrews, you can access Scholarships and Funding through MySaint. However, you should wait until after you have applied for your intended postgraduate programme before doing so, to ensure that the scholarship application is linked to the correct course.
