EPSRC provide University of St Andrews with funding for studentships through an annual Doctoral Training Partnership for the School of Chemistry, School of Computer Science, School of Mathematics and Statistics, and School of Physics and Astronomy. A maximum of 30% of intake each year can be awarded to high calibre international students and a minimum of 25% of intake would be linked to collaborative studentships.

Studentships are typically for 3.5 years, and EPSRC pay full fees and stipends at the UKRI rate for students who meet the eligibility criteria. More information on the eligibility criteria and EPSRC’s full terms and conditions can be found on the UK Research and Innovation website along with additional terms and conditions.

Additional criteria

All funding and reporting goes through the University. Students will be requested to provide project details for the EPSRC annual submission through the student research data portal in October of the first year. Additional information may be requested at any time and any changes in status to the project should be forwarded to the DTG Coordinator.

Any issues with fees or funding should be reported to finschol@st-andrews.ac.uk in the first instance.

Current award holders should refer to the UK Research and Innovation training grants: standard terms and conditions of training grant for leave of absences or extensions likely to affect funding or submission dates. Requests for these changes should be emailed to Registry PGR Change of Circumstance Student Support and Finance Advice and Support (FAS).

If a student is prevented from working by illness for a continuous period of more than two weeks they must inform Registry PGR Change of Circumstance Student Support immediately and send a medical certificate confirming the period unfit to work, regardless of whether or not the student is suspending studies.

Current students can contact the School Postgraduate Secretary, Registry or Finance Advice and Support (FAS) for additional information regarding EPSRC or University terms and conditions.

How to apply

As a prospective PhD student, you will apply to work with an individual supervisor or supervisory team within a School, not a specific programme of study. It is therefore important that you look at staff research interests within the School of Chemistry, School of Computer Science School of Mathematics and Statistics and School of Physics and Astronomy and ensure that your project matches an existing area of research.

If you are unable to identify a possible supervisor, please email School contacts, which can be found on the relevant School website.

Any academic wishing to supervise an EPSRC DTP studentship should contact their Director of Postgraduate Studies in the first instance.

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible.

Please note, to get information on the deadline for placing an application for funding commencing from October 2025, please email School contacts.
