About foundation accommodation

Foundation offer-holders are able to apply for University accommodation once they have accepted their offer to study and paid the required pre-payment fee.

For September entrants, the online accommodation application form is open from 15 March onwards. University accommodation is guaranteed for foundation students, but you should apply by 1 August to ensure your room booking is in place before your start date.

For January entrants, the online accommodation application form is open from 1 September onwards.  You should apply by 30 November.

The International Education Institute strongly recommends you apply for an en suite single room with either a self-catered or catered package. Putting these options at 1 and 2 in your application will enable us to place you in the David Russell Apartments (DRA), where you will be close to your classes and living with other foundation students.

Self-catered halls with en suite rooms

These halls are all modern buildings located on the west side of town near the Sports Centre and the various science buildings on the North Haugh.

Rooms in self-catered halls can vary in size and shape depending on the building.

John Burnet Hall is located close to the centre of town, while University Hall is situated near the Sports Centre and is a short walk from the various science buildings on the North Haugh. Whitehorn Hall is a new building located adjacent to University Hall.

Agnes Blackadder and David Russell Apartments are more modern complexes situated on the west side of town near the Sports Centre and within a short walk to the various science buildings on the North Haugh.

Rooms in catered halls can vary in size and shape depending on the age and history of the buildings.

Other accommodation options

There are also standard (not en suite) accommodation options, but these options would not enable us to offer you a room in David Russell Apartments:

Fees and contracts

Foundation students staying in David Russell Apartment on either a catered or a self-catered basis are allowed to stay in their accommodation over the Christmas and spring vacations. The Christmas period will be on a self-catered basis only.

You can find out more about fees for different types of residences on the accommodation fees page.  These fees are for the full academic year.  If you are starting in January please contact accommodation@st-andrews.ac.uk for fee details.
