Sheila - Sept 2015

Disability and SpLD Adviser

Sheila has worked with individuals who have specific learning differences (dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia and ADHD) for many years and is an experienced Disability Adviser in the higher education sector.  She takes a student-centred approach that promotes inclusion and equality of opportunity with the aim that every student with whom she works has a positive University experience.

Based on her qualifications and background in psychology, health and education, Sheila has been awarded professional membership to several organisations including: the British Dyslexia Association (AMBDA), the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (Patoss), the National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP) and the Assistive Technology Adviser Network (ATANET).  She is committed to continued professional development and has completed many courses relevant to her role such as: Mental Health First Aid, deaf awareness, autistic spectrum disorders, ADHD,  young people with epilepsy, eating disorders and inclusive assessment and technology; to name just a few.

Active involvement in several research projects has allowed Sheila to contribute to peer reviewed papers and conference presentations on topics such as literacy development, dyslexia and inclusive education. Through such research, Sheila keeps abreast of new thinking which, in turn, informs her day to day practice.
