Anita Lo

Counsellor

Anita started her career teaching Chemistry and Science at Secondary Schools in Bristol and London.  She later moved into the Higher Education Sector where she helped set up and develop a service for Students with Disabilities at the University of Salford. After working at Salford as a Disability and Equalities Co-ordinator for a number of years, she moved to Scotland where she continues to work part time as a freelance Needs Assessor.

Her years of teaching and working with students with disabilities fostered her interest in mental health issues and after gaining her Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling from the University of Abertay, Anita worked in the voluntary sector before joining The University of St Andrews in 2014.

As well as working as a counsellor at St Andrews, Anita has developed and delivered workshops on Procrastination and Culture Awareness.

Anita is committed to a collaborative, integrated approach, using strategies and tools from different therapeutic models including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).  Anita believes it is important to treat each student as an individual to enable them to find solutions to their problems, build resilience and realise their potential.

Her research interests include working with cultural and language differences and as a Cantonese speaker is able to offer counselling in both English and Cantonese.  Anita is also learning Mandarin and is a Registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy [BACP].
