Having Trouble Sleeping?

Having trouble sleeping or insomnia, or hypersomnia (sleeping too much) are quite commonplace at University. For some people these can be easily managed through making some basic life changes and, for other people, they can be the body’s way of telling them something is not quite right.

You are welcome to come to (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/studentservices/ ) to talk to one of our Advisers or Counsellors, perhaps just for some initial advice or if you feel you want to take things further.

You can drop in to make an appointment either at The ASC (The Advice and Support Centre) at 79 North Street, or our offices at Eden Court on The Scores.

Alternatively, you can:-

Phone: 01334 462020

Ten top tips for a good kip

  • Create a regular bedtime routine, starting about 45 minutes before bed. This flags up to the brain that it is time to move into sleep mode.
  • Have a hot bath or shower shortly before going to bed. This will help you feel drowsy.
  • Try eating foodstuffs that stimulate the sleep-producing chemicals in your brain. Turkey, walnuts, oats, cherries are all good.
  • Digital sunset. Keep off hi-tech gizmos near bedtime as they stimulate the brain.
  • Keep hydrated but watch what else you drink – avoid coffee from mid-afternoon onwards.
  • Keep a simple Worry Notebook by your bed. Jot down in it thoughts rushing through your mind.
  • Lie in bed and tell each part of your body to fall asleep.
  • Try out some of the Sleep apps such as those at: http://www.healthline.com/health/healthy-sleep/top-insomnia-iphone-android-apps#1
  • Think back over five good things you have seen during the day.
  • Visualise a cosy place to be and paint a vivid mental picture of it – e.g. snuggled up before a  roaring fire in a snow-covered log-cabin in the Rockies.
