University of St Andrews Mentoring Badge

Mentor ebadge

There are a number of student mentoring schemes at the University of St Andrews. They have varied aims including helping incoming students transition into undergraduate or postgraduate education; and building a sense of community (academic and sporting).

The success of the mentoring schemes depends on student volunteers who give up their time to act as mentors and guide and advise their mentees. Typically, mentors will perform their role for several weeks over the summer before their mentees arrive in St Andrews, and then onwards into the academic year. They will undergo mentoring briefing and are encouraged to reflect on the range of skills their mentoring experience has developed in them. Commonly cited skills include cultural appreciation, listening and communication, empathy and coaching.

To gain a mentoring badge, students must have been nominated by their mentees or self-nominate and provide supporting evidence as to their commitment and skill development.
