University wide review of learning and teaching space

In September 2017, the University appointed external consultants, HLM Architects, to undertake a review and analysis of the University’s existing learning and teaching spaces in order to support and inform the strategy for the University’s capital development and refurbishment projects.  The review was undertaken to identify whether there was sufficient access to learning and teaching space, whether the available spaces were fit for purpose and how we could create adequate capacity for our current and future student numbers.  This review was concluded in February 2018 with a final outcome report.

Following publication of the report, it was agreed that some of the recommendations should be implemented and tested with a refurbishment pilot project during the summer of 2018. Teaching rooms and associated learning spaces were identified in the Arts Building as well as a technology-enhanced learning (TEL) space in the Gateway Building.  These will both be operational in September 2018.

The scope of works for the various spaces are:

  • Gateway Building rooms 104 and 105 (TEL sandpit)
  • Arts Building rooms 218, 220 and 222
  • Arts Building level 2 learning space
  • Arts Building entrance area learning space

The Arts rooms, although currently timetabled, will have time allocated for those staff who wish to try out the equipment and use the rooms as a teaching space with a class.  There will be two drop-in sessions for academics to view the refurbished rooms and CAPOD staff will be on hand to answer any questions:

Arts Building rooms 218, 220 and 222 - Friday 14 September – 0930-1100 and 1430-1600

The TEL space will be timetabled separately via CAPOD and will be a specially developed and supported space where staff can come and try out new technologies to enhance their teaching, on their own or with small groups of students.  Links for booking this and details for the drop-in sessions will follow in due course.

The following report details how each room will be refurbished, including the types of furniture and technology that you can expect to see on completion:
