Before your project

Digital globe category boxGood data management is essential for the high-quality research data and research excellence that the University produces.

As part of the application process, you need to ensure that you make plans for your research data before you start collecting it, including the creation of a Data Management Plan (DMP). These are now required by most funders and by the University as referenced in the new Research Data policy.

Planning ahead for your project data management will help ensure that:

  • you have adequate technological resources.
  • your data will be robust and free from versioning errors and gaps in documentation, etc.
  • you have assigned roles and responsibilities to your project team.
  • your data is backed up and safe from sudden loss or corruption.
  • you know your legal, ethical and other obligations concerning research data and how you are going to meet these requirements.
  • you are able to share your finalised data publicly, if you and/or the funder desires.
  • your data will remain accessible and comprehensible in the near, middle, and distant future.
  • you have implemented and reviewed data management regularly throughout your research.
