Striving for excellence in athletic and sporting performance
Sport specific fitness includes a structured developmental programme that can incorporate muscular endurance, strength, power, speed, aerobic or anaerobic conditioning. It has been shown that transference of the work carried out in the Strength and Conditioning Room into sports performance is high, producing better performances and reducing the incidence of injury. Strength and conditioning should be at the heart of the weekly training schedule for all athletes, whether performing at recreational, performance or elite level. Athletes can improve speed, strength, flexibility, coordination, agility and core strength, by utilising the Olympic lifts, the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk.
Due to dynamic nature of these lifts, it is essential that these lifts are only prescribed and supervised by qualified members of staff. The staff at the department have a wealth of lifting and coaching experience and have written plans for athletes competing at the highest level in Scotland, UK and on the European circuit.
Strength & Conditioning Support
Each academic year the Strength and Conditioning Team delivers around 50 hours of coaching a week to teams or clubs who are part of our Performance Programmes or individual talented athletes on our Supported Athletes Programme.
As the demands for expertise continues to rise, the Strength and Conditioning Programme has grown outside of the Performance Suite and now offers court and field-based conditioning and fitness testing to supplement strength and power training. We now have a wider effect on sports performance, improving more areas such as speed, agility and conditioning.
The S&C Team is made up of two full-time S&C coaches, who are supported by three additional coaches and ten interns who help to deliver the programme.
Access to the Strength & Conditioning Suite
The Strength and Conditioning Suite provides the perfect environment for athletes who want to improve their sports performance and is available to all students who are part of a Performance Programme or individual athletes on the Supported Athletes Programme, as prescribed by a qualified strength and conditioning coach.
