Introduction

Mixed Martial Arts is one of the world’s fastest growing sports which blends the most effective combat techniques to make its practitioners the best fighters possible. It includes everything from stand-up striking to takedowns and submission grappling on the ground. The University of St Andrews MMA Club provides a friendly, safe and respectful environment in which members of all levels of experience can train and compete. With great coaches and trainings three times a week, members will progress quickly in their MMA knowledge; whether you’re a novice starting from the most basic techniques, someone who wants to get in shape, keen to learn self-defense or just want to have fun, the MMA club is a great sport to join.

Coaching

Our Saturday striking sessions are coached by James Russell and our Sunday grappling sessions are taught by Paul Hughes from Dundee MMA, including additional sessions by Craig Robertson also from DMMA. Our open mat and strength and conditioning sessions are led by members of the committee.

Competition

The club offers the opportunity to compete in a number of different fields including submission grappling, kickboxing and MMA itself. Last year the club sent two fighters to the Scottish Mixed Martial Arts Rookie Tournament in Aberdeen, where we won gold and bronze medals. There will be many more competitions lined up in future years, with the club offering full support to help competitors prepare.

Recreational Sessions

Most of the club's training sessions are pretty relaxed and can accommodate all standards, which allows anyone to drop in and give MMA a try whenever they'd like.
