The University of St Andrews has developed one of the leading performance water polo programmes in the UK, which offers student athletes a range of coaching, training and support opportunities, allowing them to excel in their sporting and academic achievements. St Andrews offers a healthy balance between athletics and academics. The results are undeniable: our athletes graduate with a world-class education, international sporting successes and teammates for life.
The Water Polo Programme caters for all levels of ability to ensure all players experience an athlete-centered programme that focuses on development, hard work and enjoyment. The Men’s and Women’s 1st Teams teams receive expert coaching for water polo, swimming, strength and conditioning and receive other support services that are necessary for performance improvement. Ian MacCallum is the Director of Water polo one of the highest qualified coaches in Great Britain and current Head Coach of the Great Britain Junior women team. Both Saints men and women have won the BUCS Trophy title in recent seasons. The Women's 1st Team competed in BUCS Premier North in 2016-17 and made it through to the Final 4 of the BUCS Championship.
The Men and Women’s Water Polo Teams compete in the top British Universities Leagues on Wednesday afternoons and both teams will also compete in the Cup competitions. Leagues are on a home and away basis meaning up to 14 league fixtures per season. The University programme culminates with the Scottish Universities Cup competition in March and the BUCS finals later on in the month. The annual representative Celtic Nations Tournament against Irish and Welsh Universities takes place in early April each year.
