Director of Ultimate
St Andrews is the only university in the UK to appoint a Director of Ultimate - the majority do not even have a coach. As a Director, Benji combines many hours of coaching each week with work on recruitment of players, building the club, supporting the committee and much else.
Benji Heywood was appointed in 2009 on a part-time basis, a role which he combined for many years with a role as Events Coordinator for the governing body, UK Ultimate. In the Autumn of 2017, Benji was appointed full-time to his University of St Andrews role - now not just the only the Director of Ultimate in the UK, but very possibly the only person in the world to be employed full-time as a coach by a single club.
Benji is one of the most recognised Ultimate coaches in the world thanks to his very popular Understanding Ultimate blog, where he distils his 20 years of experience into short suggestions on coaching and playing. He is also a key member of the WFDF Rules Committee that sets the rules of the sport, and was Competitions Manager at multiple WFDF World Championship events.
As a player, he still competes at the highest level during the club season and once again represented Great Britain at the World Championships in 2015 - though admittedly in the over-40s division.
